Cardinal Gibbons takes third in 3-A states

Cardinal Gibbons posted another third-place finish in the 3-A state high school girls’ golf tournament, this time at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

The Crusaders, led by Caroline O’Neil’s ninth-place effort, shot 270 and 269 on two cold, windy days on the par-71 course and ended 33 shots off the pace of Ledford, and 21 shots behind second-place West Henderson.

A year ago at Foxfire Resort, Cardinal Gibbons was third while finishing 14 shots back of Ledford.

O’Neil posted 86-80 and was 12 shots behind medalist Tara Simmons of C.B. Aycock in the individual standings. Simmons won by four shots.

Cardinal Gibbons also got strong play from by Ellen Smith, who shot 88-82 and tied for 11th.

In the 2-A/1-A championship at Foxfire Resort’s West Course, Rachel Wynne of Northwood shot 91-88 to place 13th.

Ravenscroft junior wins NCISAA title

Jessica Kittelberger claimed medalist honors in the independent school state tournament at Mid Pines Resort with an 8-over-par 80.

The one-day event featured players from all divisions of the private school association.

Cannon School of Concord won the team title with 249 with Anna Redding and Kate Collom leading the way and finishing as runner-up to Kittelberger with 82s.

Durham Academy was second in the team standings with 275. Madi Dunk led the way with 88. The Cavaliers also counted 93 by Sammy Lanevi and 94 by both Kit McHutchinson 94 and Christen Howlett.
