Paul Simson should have competed from the front tees in the N.C. Super Senior Championship Sept. 23-24 at Mill Creek Golf Club.
But the 75-year-old Raleigh legend, whose golf accomplishments include two U.S. Senior Amateur and three British Senior Amateur titles, knew he didn’t need the advantage and showed it by shooting a 3-under-par 141 total, then beating Macon Moye of Southern Pines in a playoff to win the 65+ Division.
Simson shot rounds of 69 and 72 on the rainy final day on a course set up by the Carolinas Golf Association at just over 6,000 yards. Moye shot 67 and 74 to join the playoff.
Lawrence Hicks of Greensboro won the 70+ Division with the same 69-72 score as Simson on a course measuring just over 5,600 yards. James Pearson of Charlotte was third at 143.
Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, whose 69 was the only subpar round of the final day, tied for second with Steve Fox of Pinehurst at 143. Lennie Barton of Raleigh was fourth at 145 and Rick Lafata was fifth at 146.
