MORGANTON – Courtney McKim, a member of the University of Alabama golf team that won the NCAA Championship in May, added an individual title to her 2012 collection when she won the North Carolina Women’s Amateur on June 14.
McKim, who was a state high school champion at Wakefield High School in Raleigh, won the 63rd annual N.C. Women’s Golf Association state amateur at Mimosa Hills Country Club in Morganton.
Her 215 total (71-72-72) produced a two-shot margin over a pair of collegiate contemporaries. Katherine Perry, a rising junior at UNC from Cary, and Amanda D’Ostroph, a rising senior at Charleston Southern from Whispering Pines, shared second place. Perry shot 75-71-71 and D’Ostroph posted 73-71-73.
McKim hadn’t won an individual event since the fall of her sophomore year at Oklahoma State University. After transferring to Alabama in 2011, was in the line-up for just two regular season events before gaining a spot in the Crimson Tide fivesome for the NCAA Championship.
Triangle players qualify for U.S. Junior
Stephanie Pribonic of Wake Forest, Carter Jenkins of Raleigh and Timothy Conover of Holly Springs have qualified for the U.S. Junior Championships.
Pribonic shot 75 in the June 20 sectional qualifier in Ohio and will be headed to the U.S. Girls Junior Championship in Daly City, Calif., July 16-21.
Both Jenkins and Conover made it through the June 11 sectional at Carolina Country Club in Raleigh. Jenkins was medalist with 132 and Conover was third with 136. The U.S. Junior Boys Amateur is set for The Golf Club of New England in Stratham, N.H., July 16-21.
Jenkins continued his strong play by capturing the 45th N.C. Junior Championship at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, winning six matches over three days. He defeated Eric Bae of Cary in the final match, 4 and 3, on June 22.
