A Raleigh player is in position to win what could be the final event ever in LIV Golf.
Michael La Sasso shot 4-under-par 66 Saturday for a 13-under total through 54 holes at The Club at Chatham Hills and a one-shot lead entering Sunday’s final round of LIV Golf Indianapolis.
The 22-year-old La Sasso, who played at St. David’s School and N.C. State before finishing his college career at Ole Miss, leads four players, including 2022 British Open champion Cameron Smith, by one shot. La Sasso shot 60 on Friday.
Wrapping up his first pro season after winning the 2025 NCAA Championship, La Sasso has not finished better than a tie for 12th in any of his previous 11 LIV tournaments. He reportedly signed a multi-million deal with LIV in January.
La Sasso said he’s tried to make each LIV tournament a learning experience.
“Kind of going into this year, after every event, I always try and get something from each place, kind of just to hold as a personal thing to realize what I learned that week and something to reflect on” he told reporters Saturday.
“Being able to say I’ve traveled all these different places, I have so many little trinkets at home just to go back on good memories and certain things that I learned from that week. Every place that we’ve been to has been very cool.
Sunday’s final round will be televised by Fox (Fox 50 in the Triangle, Fox 8 in the Triad) from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m.
Indianapolis is the final tournament on the 2026 LIV Golf schedule. The future of the tour is yet to be determined. The Saudi Public Investment Fund has announced it will no longer fund the tour. LIV commissioner Scott O’Neil has told reporters he has an investor lined up for a 2027 schedule offering players equity in the tour in return for smaller purses.
La Sasso has signed up for the upcoming DP World Tour qualifying tournament. He may have some roadblocks if he attempts to qualify for the PGA Tour.
