An iconic Triangle golf course has opened vastly expanded practice facilities in the last month.
Hillandale Golf Course, a hub of public golf in Durham for decades, debuted its new 58-mat driving tee as well as an approximately 20,000 square foot putting green at its practice area.
The new practice green includes a nine-hole putting course and a chipping area.
The driving range, which formerly had only 20 teeing areas, was expanded away from the clubhouse with mats contoured to fit the shape of a range enclosed with netting. Future plans call for sodded tee areas.
The vast putting green, which includes a nine-hole putting course, was built near the clubhouse in an area where a cluster of trees was cleared.
The changes allow for new longer back tees at the first and 10th holes.
The expanded teeing area at the driving range extends down to the players in the distance.
The City of Durham, which has owned Hillandale since 2011, spent about $1 million on the changes. Amerazil Golf, manger of the facility, also contributed funds toward the improvements.
