Led by medalist Smth Summerlin, Broughton came within one shot of knocking off perennial power Pinecrest on its home turf Tuesday at the Class 8A State Championship at Pinehurst No. 8.
Pinecrest posted 3-over-par 579. Broughton shot 290 in each round, gaining six shots in the final round.
Summerlin fired 71 for a 5-under 139 total to beat Jackson Bryce of Green Hope by four strokes. But Broughton’s 580 team total was one shot more than Pinecrest.
A state record was set in Class 3A as Pennson Badgett shot 67 to pair with his amazing 60 on Monday to win medalist honors by nine strokes at Longleaf Golf Club in Southern Pines.
Badgett’s 15-under 127 total broke the record of 13-under 129 set in 2011 by PGA Tour champion J.T. Poston of Hickory.
Daniel McBrien of Apex and Isaiah Adel of Wakefield joined a four-way tie for third at even-par 144. Baker Carr finished at 145 and Preston Hage posted 148 for Broughton. Flynn Lewis of Green Hope also shot 148.
In 5A, Lincoln Newton claimed the medal by six shots to lead Oak Grove to the team title by six shots over South Point. Newton, a senior, posted 67 Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole total of 9-under 135 on a par-72 Sapona course that measured 6,620 yards.
Terry Sanford cruised to the 6A team title, though Jack Weston, a freshman from Northern Guilford, was medalist, beating Charlie Horne of Terry Sanford, by one stroke.
Oak Grove posted 594 for the tournament, 26-over. Seaforth was third at 605.
Weston shot 71 for a 138 total to overcome a one-shot deficit to Horne entering the day and a posse of his teammates from Terry Sanford, which claimed positions 2 through 5 on the individual leaderboard with three players finishing at 140. Courie Taft, Sanford’s No. 5 player, shot 147 to round out the top 10.
Terry Sanford blitzed the field with 18-under 558, 31 ahead of Charlotte Catholic. Northern was third with 600.
Marvin Ridge won 7A over Cardinal Gibbons and Heritage. Eric Chavez of Heritage was third at 143. Ian McGee posted 145 and Charles McPherson 147 for Gibbons. Hunter Hobbs of Heritage was seventh with 149 and Gibbons’ Jack Schaad was eighth with 150.
Lane Crotts shot 64 at Longleaf Golf Club for a 134 total to earn medalist in 4A and lead Cramer to the team title with 567. Northside of Pinetown won 1A and Mitchell won 2A at Gates Four Country Club in Fayetteville.
