A charity golf tournament held at Crooked Creek Golf Club in mid August to help fund cancer research raised more than $10,000.
The inaugural Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund LPGA Pro-Am drew 31 LPGA or Futures Tour pros, along with 155 players. That group included Ashley Prange, a former University of North Carolina star golfer and winner of Big Break V: Hawaii; Futures Tour all-time money winner Lori Atsedes; and former LPGA Tour winner and current N.C. State women’s golf assistant coach Maggie Will.
The event was organized by Crooked Creek head golf pro Joellyn Crooks, herself a former professional tour golfer.
“I was extremely pleased with the outcome of the event,” Crooks said. “We raised a lot of money for cancer research and we had a lot of fun.”
Crooks plans to hold the event again in 2011.
Yow, the former Wolfpack Hall of Fame women’s basketball coach, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and passed away Jan. 24, 2009.
The WBCA Cancer Fund is a partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Yow was a founding member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and its former president.
