Franklin Academy in Wake Forest placed second in the Mideast Regional with four golfers finishing in the top 10, but didn’t fare so well at the 1-A state high school championship at Longleaf Golf and Country Club.
The Patriots placed seventh – 64 shots behind winner Mount Airy.
Grant Lewis was the only player to crack 80 on the team with a second-round 79 to finish 24-over-par, good enough for a tie for 33rd.
Lewis finished tied for 15th last year and placed 11th in 2014.
The five-member Franklin Academy team recorded just a combined four birdies over the 36-hole, two-day event.
No Triangle-area school has won the 1-A state title since the North Carolina High School Athletic Association separated the lower class from 2-A competition in 1998.
