Adam Alfieri finished his senior year of high school golf on quite a roll.
The Carrboro standout won the Mid-State 2-A Conference individual title, placed sixth in the Mideast Regional and capped it off with a top-10 effort in the 2-A state championship at Foxfire Resort’s Gray Fox Course.
Alfieri, who missed his junior season because of an injury, posted 77-75 and tied for ninth at 152. That was seven shots off the pace of Providence Grove junior Justin Emmons, who won in a playoff over Logan McNeely of Newton-Conover. Emmons posted 77-68 and then recorded a par on the first playoff hole to defeat McNeely, who shot 70-75.
A pair of double bogeys – one in each round – hurt Alfieri’s chances to finish even higher. He made the turn in the second round at even par, balancing a birdie on the par-3 second hole with a bogey at the fourth. He doubled the 11th and bogeyed the 15th, but otherwise had all pars on a back nine 39.
It was Alfieri’s second top-25 showing in the states, having finished 23rd as a freshman.
The team championship went to Wilkes Central in a runaway. The Eagles posted a pair of 310s and won by 21 over Clinton.
There were no Triangle-area teams in the field.
